News and Information about Solar Panels
Are solar panel prices on the decline? With the news in October 2011 regarding the proposed changes to the feed-in tariff scheme there is a lot of talk across the solar industry that solar panel prices will have to drop to keep the industry afloat. The proposed changes will see the payments that the FITs scheme makes to homeowners and businesses drop by more than 50%, which many believe, will mean solar panel installers will need to drop their prices.
Solar power is a technology that has been around for a long while now but is constantly being developed and enhanced to improve the efficiency of new panels coming into the market. For this reason solar panels have always been priced at a premium. Since the start of the FITs scheme the demand for solar panels in the UK has grown substantially meaning solar panel installers have been able to buy materials in bulk therefore saving money and increasing their profits. There has also been a natural decline in the production cost because of the increased demand.
Most solar panel companies have been enjoying the additional profits they have been able to make but now see that with the imminent changes they will need to reduce their prices. By bringing the initial solar panel prices down, installers will still be able to demonstrate a healthy return for any prospective customers therefore keeping their business momentum going even with the FITs changes.
The consultation is set for the 23rd December 2011 to find out whether the proposed changes will come into effect. Even if these changes do not, it is almost certain there will be changes that will reduce the payments as the fund is rapidly depreciating. This means solar panel installers across the UK will need to review their business plans and adjust to the changing market.
